Interesting DLC Experiment Currently Taking Place.

Downloadble content is a bit of a hot topic, we all love extra stuff but not when that “extra” stuff was purposely left out just to make us pay a little bit more. Then there’s the extra stuff that costs way more than should, 200 MS points just for a piece of artificial clothing? No thanks.
Well Cliff Harris, an independent game designer (sometimes boat-builder) is running a little experiment with the latest DLC for his game Gratuitous Space Battles. The DLC has a brand new race called ‘The Nomads’ with no additional Tech or missions, just a ‘few extra tweaked ship modules’. Basically a new skin then, but one that comes with an interesting back story.
There are two versions of the DLC to download the standard version that retails at $5.99 (the same price of previous DLC’s) and the discount version retailing at $2.99. What’s the difference? Well the price is.
That’s right the only difference between the $5.99 version and the $2.99 version is the price, both people get the same file and everything is identical so nobody will even be able to tell what version you purchased. The only thing you’ll get for buying the standard version is the knowledge that you’re helping to feed an independent game maker. Cliff had this to say on his official blog;
"If you genuinely have very very little money and would have waited months hoping for a bundle or a sale, then you could make an argument you could get the discount one. If you frankly, *do* have the money to spare and would buy it anyway if there was only the $5.99 option, I’m asking you to do that."
It’s an interesting experiment which reminds me of Wolfire’s Humble Indie Bundle, where people could pay what they liked for 6 top indie games and some of the money would go to charity. However seems that people opted to pay far less than what the games were worth so I think Cliff might punch himself in a couple of months time.
