Assassins’ Creed the Movie.

As time progresses we’ve quickly realised that games and movies, they’re not so different anymore. They both have plots, designed to be viewed through the use of a screen and people use them to either to switch off or provide some mental activity. As such movie/game tie-ins have become a pretty standard thing with one side generally being the worse off.
What’s unusual about the upcoming Assassins’ Creed movies (yes plural) is that it’s being made by Ubisoft itself along with a Hollywood special effects studio Hybride Technologies Ubisoft recently purchased. These “movies” to be fair are basically really long trailers, three ~38 minute movies set before the event of Assassins’ Creed II are being made under the title “Lineage” designed to promote the game.

Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat told VentureBeat. “We’re making games. We are now making movies. And with the Assassin’s Creed: Lineage film series, the production value that went into these shorts is exactly the same should we have decided to go with a long feature. And I think that that says it all.”
Yes that’s right Ubisoft isn’t stopping after finishing up this movie with the Montreal Movie Department planning to employ an extra 500 people by 2013. To me this event is akin to Marvel Comics retaining their movie rights and producing their own movies. They get all the money and the fans (hopefully) get movies that remain true to their videogame roots.
The live-action shorts, filmed almost completely in front of a green-screen should appear on Youtube on October the 27th.
