Tony Hawks’ Ride 2 On The Way?

Tony Hawks’ Ride, it was an interesting idea probably seeing how fans loved Guitar Hero not so much because of the game but because of the way you played it. Then with the advent of the Wii Fit Board it seemed people rather enjoyed wobbling about and so Ride was born.

In theory it was a fantastic idea, players get to stand on something that looks like a skateboard which is actually a highly sensitive controller designed to mimic your actions in-game. Allowing the common man to reform ollies, endos and occasional face-plants without the pain of cuts and wearing a beanie everywhere. In practice however it never lived up to its potential. The movements you made of the board barely registered or were overzealous, there was noticeable lag and any complex moves was a no-go for anybody with less than three legs. Not forgetting the massive price tag; it’s understandable that the game sold poorly.

Well Tony Hawks and Activision haven’t finished yet, another game utilising the board peripheral is due for release in winter this year. Although that game hasn’t been confirmed as Ride 2. I thought it was the hardware itself that was the problem but according to CEO Mike Griffith “It took longer to optimize the hardware, leaving less time to optimize the software," meaning that if they spend some additional time on the programming then the board could finally be fun and worth the price tag.

With the coming of both Sony’s motion controller (and eye camera) and Microsoft’s Project Natal any future games could be a winner, coupled with a responsive board but I won’t hold my breath.
