Well E3 is not quite over with yet as there are two days left to go, but with the big three done with each of the respective press conferences we here at Meodia.com declare who we think won E3. So with no more delay let’s get right into it shall we.
3rd Place
Microsoft
Microsoft had a solid conference overall, but were lacking in the “wow” department. We saw some great gameplay videos of Halo: Reach, Gears of War 3, and Call of Duty: Black Ops, but soon after these impressive videos Microsoft rolled out Project Natal, which is now officially known as Kinect. The dashboard features that Kinect used were very simple and impressive. Another great announcement was the fact that ESPN is partnering with Microsoft to give sports fans everything they desire (minus NFL coverage) without any additional charge to current Xbox Live Gold members. This addition almost seems like good motivation for me to upgrade back to Gold status.

The wheels began to fall off right around when Microsoft began showing the Kinect games. Things got awkward right off the bat with the demonstration of Kinectimals. Those of you who actually watched the press conference know what I am talking about. All the games shown didn’t look much better than what was currently on the Wii, and all the “demonstrations” looked as if they were pre-recorded and as if they just had the people mimicking what was on screen. What sealed the deal for Microsoft coming in last out of the big three was the fact that they just really drug out the whole presentation of Kinect, which was not even that impressive in terms of what games were shown, and on top of that a price was not even announced by Microsoft.
2nd Place
Nintendo
Now before you jump all over me for this, I just want to say how hard this choice was. Nintendo had an absolutely amazing conference! Nintendo really focused on giving the hardcore gamers what they wanted. Some games that might catch your interest that were announced are: Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby’s Epic Yarn, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, and Kid Icarus. As if this these announcements didn’t impress, Nintendo also revealed the 3DS. The 3DS offers full 3-D support WITHOUT having to wear glasses, and is going to be launching with a slew of games from some popular series including Metal Gear Solid, Saints Row, Resident Evil, and Madden NFL Football.

What prevented Nintendo from winning was the fact that just about all the games that were announced are not new IPs. I understand you can have great games that are sequels and rehashes, but I would have loved to have seen Nintendo reveal a fresh new IP. Another thing that hurt Nintendo was, believe it or not, the new Zelda game. Nintendo demonstrated how Zelda: Skyward Sword worked with the Wii, but the demo did not go as well as they had hoped as a whole bunch of control issues were seen. The Sling-Shot and the Bow-and-Arrow did not work as intended. These problems were blamed on everyone using wireless internet which interfered with the Wii somehow. It was a great conference, but it had its issues that kept it from being truly amazing.
1st Place
Sony
Well I am sure by process of elimination you have already figured out who the winner was. Sony had an amazing conference. A couple of surprise announcements probably caught quite a few people off guard. One of those announcements was probably that Portal 2, yes you read correctly, is coming to the PlayStation 3 platform! Another announcement that surprised some people was the reveal of David Jaffe’s new game, and no surprise here it was a new Twisted Metal game, which was revealed in an epic way and looked awesome to say the least! But what sealed the deal for Sony taking the cake was Kevin Butler’s inspirational speech for all gamers! Butler worked the crowd very well, and provided a ton of laughs that helped Sony have a very informative, yet entertaining conference. And, if that wasn’t enough, Gran Turismo 5 FINALLY has a release date. Gran Turismo 5 is set to release on November 2nd, 2010.

If you had to knock on Sony’s conference in any shape or form you could say that they talked A LOT, and I mean A LOT. Thankfully they did not spend nearly twenty minutes going over sales figures from 2009. Another slight knock was the fact that there were tons of montages shown rather than just focusing on some of the bigger titles that are highly anticipated. Despite these complaints Sony’s press conference was well paced, and the PlayStation Move demonstration did not drag on near as long as Microsoft’s Kinect demonstration.
