Golden Eye, few games in history have been held up as a shinely beacon on excellence more than Golden Eye. Its a bit odd really as most James Bond games are, to be kind, less than fantastic and you can of course thank Rare Studios and their fantastic work. So have Activision managed to stay true to the original yet manage to bring it up to modern times? I think the answer is yes.
They wouldn't let us play through the single player but instead we watched as they ran through one of the earliest missions. Breaking into a Russian dam. Actors Daniel Craig and Judy Dench where doing the voice work and each one has their likeness in the game (instead of Pierce Brosnan from the original) and Daniel Craig's stunt double has done the motion capture. They've gone all out on making sure that everything matches up to the world of James Bond. James Bond is a lot more nimble in this game he was in the original. Able to easily vault over waist-high fences and climb up sections of enivorment with ease.
We're promised that all the missions can be completed either through sneathly means or if you prefer just by combat. The playthrough we watched had Bond go through sneathy, using a silenced pistol to take out enemies from a distance and one-hit kill melee attacks. Things did switch soon after that as rein-forcements arrived. He whipped out a sniper rifle from one of the downed opponents and took a couple of shots at the on-coming soldiers. He then jumped down from the watchtower and took cover behind a barrier, before popping out and swifly taking out the remaining soldiers with a machine gun. The cover in this game is destructable so you won't be able to just sit in one spot (ah-la Gears of War) and comfortably take on waves of oncoming enemies, you'll be forced to move and adapt. Of course this goes both ways and if you have a powerful weapon you'll be able to shoot try through cover into the squishy bodies of those behind.
There are several different routes to take in the levels, in the playthrough he could have gone through a large blastdoor but instead opted to break the lock of a chain-link fence and sneak around to the side. This game plays into how you want to play through the game. Going through the blast door would have alerted the enemies to Bond's pressence and we would have
got involved in a fire-fight whereas sneaking around allows you to take out most of the people in the room without anybody even noticing something is wrong until the last moment. If you do get into a firefight you'll have a little timer at the top of the screen. This is the reinforcement timer,
if you don't manage to defeat the enemies in the area within that time limit more will turn up.
They promise multiple gadgets in the game but most of it will be down through Bond's smart phone. We saw him hack a terminal to prevent people from being alerted to our presence but it will have loads of uses in the game. At one point Bond bursts into a room and time slows, which allows you to target and take out the horde of guards that are waiting behind the door. Fail to do so and they'll set of the alarm, once again it'll change the experiance you have in the game. We also saw a driving section, we weren't driving instead we took the role of shooting down oncoming vechicles or things blocking the road.
Now on the mutliplayer, they've been letting everybody play on the multiplayer. At the moment there are only eight different characters announced but more will appear. Other than the standard deathmatch there are additional modes announced; paintball, golden gun, you only live once. For local-multiplayer yo to four people can join in the gun-fun but it has an online mode which will allow up to eight people to face off against each other.
It's good fun and I can say I didn't realise how much I missed this four-split screen fun. You control it with the classic controller using the analogue sticks to move and control the camera, the trigger buttons to fire and you can also throw a grenade into the mix. Melee kills are present and provide you get in close enough it'll be an instant kill. At the end of the match you get to see the rankins and then you'll get list of achivements detailing how your preformed; some are good,
some, not so much.
Really looking forward to this game, the single player offers a varied interesting game and the mutliplayer with provide hours of hour whether you're with a group of friends or alone and with an internet connection. Will it regain its title of mutliplayer king, well on the Wii anyway it's a very good contender.
