Yes another article detailing ‘The Faces Behind the Videogame Voices’. This is mainly because it never feels like a complete list; there are still so many characters out there and provided games continue to be made more talented actors will appear. Yes here is yet another 10 people that voice the characters of our favourite games.
The Joker from Batman: Arkham Asylum/ Mark Hamill
Where Else Have I Heard that Voice?
Oh I feel a bit bad to choosing that picture, as I’m sure most of you haven’t seen him since the ‘Star Wars’ movies back in the 70’s and early 80’s, but that’s age for you. Well encase you don’t know Mark Hamill is most famous for his role in ‘Star Wars’ as the central character Luke Skywalker but it’s the general opinion that he failed to capitalise on the franchise’s success like Harrison Ford did.
Hollywood’s loss is our gain though; as Mark has done countless voice work of cartoons and games. This isn’t the first time he’s voiced the Joker from Batman and has done him in so many shows that’s its pretty hard to imagine the Joker sounding like anybody else. Aside from Batman he’s Buzz Buzzard in ‘The New Woody Woodpecker Show’, Master Eraqus in ‘Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep’, Christopher "Maverick" Blair in the ’Wing Commander’ series, Niju the Evil Wolf in ‘Balto II: Wolf Quest’. Also appearing in Seth Green’s ‘Robot Chicken’, ‘Danny Phantom’, ‘What's New, Scooby-Doo?’, ‘Samurai Jack’, ‘Johnny Bravo’, ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’, ‘SpongBob SquarePants’ and 200 others I won’t mention.
Here he is in the movie’ Jay And Silent Bob’, coincidently he did the voice of Scooby Doo in this film too;
Raziel from Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver/ Michael Bell
Where Else Have I Heard that Voice?
In the last list I had Simon Templeman who did the voice of Kain in the same series. Michael Bell is a much more prolific voice actor than his co-star. Born in 1938 Michael started out as a general actor first appearing in ’Across the Bridge’ in 1957 and continued to have steady work until 1972 which is the year when he first did voice work in ‘The Houndcats’. He continues to be very successful on the screen actor with a couple of voice roles sprinkled throughout but in 1983 suddenly all the on-screen performances dry up and he’s doing multiple voice work on all kinds of shows.
If you grew up in the 80’s chances are you’ve heard Michael Bell, he was Dr. Bruce Banner in ‘The Incredible Hulk’, Duke in ‘G.I. Joe: The Revenge of Cobra’, Prowl, Scrapper, Swoop and Junkion in ‘The Transformers: The Movie’ as well as doing work on the ‘Smurfs’, ‘DuckTales’, ‘The Snorks’, ‘The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest’, ‘Jetsons: The Movie’ and pretty much anything else you care to mention. That’s before getting onto the videogame work where he was Lawrence in ‘Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time’, Nihlathak in the game ‘Diablo II: Lord of Destruction’, The Fear in ‘Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater’, Guts in ‘Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage’, Peter Jacob in ‘Eternal Darkness’, Sed in ‘Lost Odyssey’, The President in ‘Condemned 2: Bloodshot’, Kahn in ‘Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance’ and he’s worked on so many others I’m not even going to try to sum up any more, simply know that he’s been loads of voice work for the past 30 years.
Here he is talking about the classic voice actor Mel Blanc (Bugs Bunny) spitting over him, he’s sporting a stunning moustache.
Pikachu from Pokemon/ Ootani Ikue
Where Else Have I Heard that Voice?
This one is really hard for me to do; chances are you’ve never heard her in anything else because she’s Japanese and she doesn’t do much work anywhere else. A little about her though, she’s 4 feet 11 inches tall, her talents are “English pronunciation” which I assume doesn’t mean she can actually speak English fluently and “Japanese dancing” whatever that is. She’s known for doing voice work on characters with Yellow hair Pikachu of course and then there is Ion, Sync and Florian from ‘Tales of theAbyss’.
In Japan she’s done 100’s of roles including work on ‘Shenmue II’ (you may have heard that if you got the Dreamcast verion), ‘Sonic Shuffle’, ‘WALL-E’, ‘The Fairly Oddparents’, ’Sailor Moon S’, ‘Naruto’ and of course loads more you have never heard of.
Here she is showing just how weird it is to have a real person say ‘PikAchu’
Cortana from Halo: Combat Evolved / Jen Taylor
Where Else Have I Heard that Voice?
Jen Taylor almost didn’t make it into the list, Debi Mae West was but Jen seemed more interesting. Jen started doing voice over work back in 1997 with the game ‘Backyard Baseball’ and has kept going racking up 40 roles. She’s also done work on the audio book; ‘Halo: Contact Harvest’.
Aside from doing Cortana she’s also Princess Peach and Toad in various ‘Super Mario’ games, Cate Archer in ‘Contract J.A.C.K.’, Amanda Young in the videogame of ‘Saw’ but you might also know her as Zoey from ‘Left 4 Dead’, yup she’s the chick you always end up playing as.
Here she is travelling around meeting up with the world’s biggest Halo fans. It’s interesting at just how separated the talent is from the actual fan-base.
Morrigan from Dragon Age: Origins/Claudia Black
Where Else Have I Heard that Voice?
Claudia Black is an Austrailian actress (shocking revelation I know) that is probably best known as Aeryn Sun from ‘Farscape’, a surprisingly good space based show that managed to be very different from ‘Star Trek’. Of course being an Austrailian actress she’s appeared in ‘Home and Away’, it was either that or ‘Neighbours’ and I think she picked wisely. She was Cassandra in ‘Hercules: The Legendary Journeys’, Karina in ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’, Vala Mal Doran in ‘Stargate: SG1’, Pandora in ‘Queen of the Damned’ and of course Sharon 'Shazza' Montgomery in ‘Pitch Black.
She has started moving more into the voice-over business though, doing work on ‘Conan’, ‘Crysis’, ‘Uncharted 2: Among Thieves’ and another Bioware game you may have heard about ‘Mass Effect 2’. Expect to see her again in more movies and probably a lot more voice roles in the future.
Here she is talking about who’s the best kisser; Michael Shanks from Stargate: SG 1 or Ben Browder from Farscape.
