 This is the depressing story that the parents of a premature baby allegedly let it starve to death because they were too busy living their virtual lives and looking after their equally virtual baby.
Taking place in an Seoul suburb, South Korea; known for its cheap internet and excessive amounts of addiction, like the man that played a game for 50 hours straight and died of a heart attack, this is just another story that validates its Internet Addiction clinic.
The little girl, born 3 months premature was apparently only fed powdered milk once every 12 hours as an afterthought, in-between login sessions at the couples local internet cafe. They became obsessed with raising their virtual child on the game Prius Online, a S. Korean version of Second Life. The couple was arrested 5 months after reporting their baby’s death probably because the baby’s autopsy showed that she’d died due to a long period of malnutrition.
"The couple seemed to have lost their will to live a normal life, because they didn't have jobs and gave birth to a premature baby," said Chung Jin-won, a police officer.
"They indulged themselves in the online game of raising a virtual character so as to escape from reality, which led to the death of their real baby."
Professor Kwak Dae-kyung of Seoul's Dongguk University went further and said;
"Online game addiction can blur the line between reality and the virtual world. It seems that taking care of their on-line game character erased any sense of guilt they may have had for neglecting their daughter... This kind of situation is not a problem that an individual can solve,"
